A disgruntled soldier named Justin Martialis, whom future emperor Macrinus had recruited to assassinate Caracalla so he would become emperor. The soldier stepped forward and stabbed Caracalla to death. Martialis was immediately killed by one of Caracalla’s bodyguards, conveniently silencing the direct link to the conspirators.
