Fried chicken is among Americans’ favorite foods, and the dish is celebrated Monday, July 6, on National Fried Chicken Day.

Like many made-up holidays, there’s no origin for July 6 being designated as a day devoted to fried chicken, according to the National Day Calendar site.

But the fact is fried chicken is one of the most-loved foods in the United States, surpassed only as the country’s most-favored entree by the cheeseburger, hamburger and grilled cheese sandwich in YouGov’s regularly updated ranking of the most popular American dishes. For the record, another fried food, french fries, tops the list.

Americans’ consumption of chicken has risen 39% since 2000 to an estimated 107.6 pounds per person, on average, according to the National Chicken Council. During that time, total red meat consumption (including, beef, pork, mutton and lamb) declined about 7% to 110.8 pounds.

If you have an appetite for fried chicken, many fast-food spots and restaurants have National Fried Chicken Day deals and specials on and around Monday, July 6. Don’t forget to check the social media accounts of your local favorite eating spots for more deals.
