In an effort to streamline operations, automaker General Motors (NYSE:GM) will cut around 940 IT jobs in Arizona as it will shut its Arizona IT Innovation Center in October, according to a Detroit Free Press report.
“We’re rationalizing the number of IT innovation centers we have in the country,” said company spokesperson Kevin Kelly. “We’re keeping the other three. But as we look at efficiencies, there were some redundancies and that’s why we decided to remove one of the centers.”
He added that some employees at the center working on vehicle software will remain in their roles. Employees being laid off can apply for other openings at GM (GM).
In a companywide email, Stacy Lynett, GM’s (GM) VP of Information and Digital Technology, said the automaker plans to transition some of the work being done at the Arizona IT Center to other centers.
“… we will be working with individual leaders on a plan to transition the work and knowledge… This includes realigning teams and updates to employees with a leader in Arizona,” she said.
The layoffs closely follow GM’s (GM) move to eliminate about 500 executive-level and salaried jobs to cut costs. Later, it was revealed that all salaried personnel with more than five years of service were offered a buyout.
