Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) is making its next big ambitious move in videogaming by indulging its subscribers’ criminal underworld fantasies — via bringing a trio of Grand Theft Auto franchise games to mobile.
The streamer will launch Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition at no extra charge for its subscribers Dec. 14.
That includes a trio of the franchise’s definitive-edition titles from the early 2000s: Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
The games, originally console hits, have been updated for mobile play, and like its other games will feature no extra fees, ads or in-app purchases, Netflix (NFLX) says.
Subscribers can pre-register for the games starting today.
The Grand Theft Auto series — made by Rockstar Games, part of Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ:TTWO) — has become one of the videogame industry’s all-time cash cows, having shipped hundreds of millions of units in its 26-year history. The publisher originally launched this definitive-edition trilogy of the games in late 2021.
The Netflix news comes amid a wave of excitement over the long-awaited next entry in Take-Two’s series, Grand Theft Auto VI. A trailer for the game, the franchise’s first new entry in a decade, is arriving in early December, coinciding with Netflix’s game launch.
