Have you ever loved a TV show early on but it eventually became unwatchable? Someone in a popular online forum asked, “What TV show did you get really far into but eventually quit watching before its conclusion?” Here are the top 14 responses.
1 – True Blood
“True Blood,” one person said. “It got so confusing, it was far too much effort to keep watching. Another added, “Season 1 is so good. That show made me wonder if shows like True Blood are impossible to keep good. They have to keep topping themselves and the audience just doesn’t make the jump with the writers. It has to be grounded in something, otherwise, it comes off like lame fanfic.”
Another TV lover added, “That very first scene at the gas station is one of my favorite openings for a show ever. It did such a great job at subverting what we think vampires are and true blood. Then it went off the rails.”
2 – Supernatural
One person suggested Supernatural. “I fell off after the darkness arc. Just couldn’t do it anymore — even the nostalgia factor wore off,” one disappointed fan said.
Another said, “It was a great show for a while, but eventually it just became Sam trying to leave the lifestyle and Dean trying to get him to come back, then Dean trying to leave the lifestyle and Sam trying to get him to come back, then Sam trying to leave, etc. Also, it became pretty much angels and demons with very few other supernatural beings and monsters.”
3 – Riverdale
The introduction of the character “Sweet Pea” was a bridge too far for one former Riverdale fan. But they freely admit they may have given the show more credit than they should have.
“I was convinced that Sweet Pea would introduce Popeye eventually and that Pop’s Diner was some type of portal,” they said, “And it would all be revealed they were in a comic book. I might have had too high expectations for Riverdale.”
4 – The Blacklist
Unfortunately, The Blacklist‘s final season came way too late for fans from the early days. After the main storyline was tied up, the show lost the thing that made it stand out against other procedurals.
As one former fan pointed out, “At some point, the writing became too much ‘making it up as we go,’ and the illusion of an overarching machination started to fall apart… and so did the entire draw of the show.”
5 – Pretty Little Liars
The problem with Pretty Little Liars, at least for one viewer, is that they treated the viewer like they’re stupid.
“In shows like Pretty Little Liars, writers should be sophisticated and drop hints, clues, and red herrings. So when the BIG reveal happens, you are supposed to go, ‘OH MY GOD! HOW DID I MISS THAT? IT MAKES SOO MUCH SENSE NOW.’”
But when it came time for the big reveal in PLL, many were disappointed to find out the twist hadn’t been hiding in plain sight.
6 – Shameless
Watching people destroy their lives is entertaining only for so long. One viewer confessed they didn’t finish the series but not because of any specific thing — the show just didn’t keep them interested.
However, another former fan knew exactly why they stopped watching. Not only were they at their limit of how much self-destruction they could stomach, but they also felt the drama started becoming too over-the-top. “At one point, the drama felt just so fabricated it stopped being interesting,” they explained.
7 – Suits
A critic of Suits stated, “It was a show about two superhero lawyers in the early seasons. Then, somewhere along the line, they seemed to have forgotten the whole ‘Mike never went to college’ plot.”
They continued, “Instead, every episode became ‘Let’s have the entire cast scream at each other for 44 minutes.’ Suits may have been the death of USA Network. Remember when they had Monk, Psych, Burn Notice, and Covert Affairs? Now they have Chrisley and Chicago PD reruns.”
8 – Arrow
One burned-out fan of Arrow said, “Got tired of the main character flip-flopping from season to season. I felt he was hypocritical when he killed people in the first season and then hunted down people doing the same thing he did in the next, only to go back to kill people in the following season.”
Another viewer of the show shared, “I got so far with all the Arrowverse shows, and then they all slowly became like a teen drama with Power Ranger budget fight scenes.”
9 – Once Upon a Time
One person noted, “Can’t even remember where I got to” with Once Upon a Time. Another said, “Seriously. The first season was so incredible, beautiful storytelling, deep characters, and then it never recovered the original feel of season one.”
A third former fan agreed, saying, “I feel like this was written to be a one-season and done series, then after the success, they couldn’t let it go, so just kept going without any real plan.”
10 – Grey’s Anatomy
One person said, “How much trauma can a group of doctors go through? Sheesh!” Another TV viewer shared, “The shooting episode was done fantastically, really got at the tension of the situation, and you were terrified for the characters’ lives.”
They continued, “When they started killing them off left and right, it got old fast. It’s a medical show. Just have them get another job — you don’t have to kill characters to write them off.”
11 – Orange Is the New Black
One critic said, “Piper just got so unbearable to watch.” Another added, “I stopped watching it, but years later, my wife and I were out of things to watch, so we put that on.” A third person added, “When Poussey died, I was done with Orange is the New Black at that exact moment..”
12 – The Walking Dead
One person said, “The Walking Dead never went anywhere. I wanted a conclusion, a solution, something new that wasn’t killing and fighting other people. I wanted smart solutions, but they never arrived.” Another added, “You made it farther than me. I stopped once I realized that the show would never decide if it wanted to follow the comics or do its own thing.”
13 – House of Cards
Viewers were obsessed when House of Cards first aired. The first couple of seasons were binge-worthy. But as the series went on and Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey) became president, the series fizzled out. Of course, Kevin Spacey’s scandalous personal life didn’t help. One viewer said, “That was definitely the nail in the ‘not finishing this’ coffin.”
14 – Dexter
A lot of fans were disappointed with Dexter. “It started off incredible then just tapered out, getting worse every season,” one TV lover shared.
Another person agreed, noting, “Dexter was so good but seasons 5-7 were so bad I had to force myself to watch it just because I had to finish it. I was like, ‘I’ve put so much time into this, I can’t give up.’ Would not recommend.”
