Chrysler is initiating a recall of over 211,000 Stellantis SUVs and pickup trucks in the U.S., due to a possible defect in the electronic stability control systems. The implicated 2022 models include Dodge Durango, Ram 2500, and Ram 3500. The software defect could cause the system to malfunction, thus increasing the risk of accidents, particularly on slippery surfaces.
Reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggest potential issues in the anti-lock braking control module, which could result in impaired functions, compromising overall vehicle stability. This might increase the chances of skidding, spinning out, or losing vehicle control, subsequently leading to severe accidents.
Most alarming is the potential lack of warning signs before the system failure. NHTSA emphasizes that affected vehicle owners should act promptly to rectify the defects in their anti-lock braking control modules, highlighting the severe consequences of inaction.
In response, local dealerships will provide free software updates to affected vehicles. Details about this process are set to be released in letters to vehicle owners on July 26.
Addressing software defects in Stellantis models
However, it’s unclear if an immediate fix will be available to all impacted owners, as this depends on each dealership’s capacity and resources.
In some instances, vehicle owners may need to entirely replace the module rather than update it. Owners should check their mail regularly for recall information, and are encouraged to reach out to customer service with any questions or concerns.
Vehicle owners with concerns should consult their dealership or Chrysler’s recall help center. Despite the software issue, no related injuries or crashes have been reported so far. This recall specifically targets certain models manufactured between April 2021 and December 2022, not all vehicles of these models are affected. Similar recalls are also being planned in Canada, Mexico, and other international markets, impacting an additional 24,798 vehicles.
Stellantis assures its customers that it prioritizes their safety and is working diligently towards a resolution. Safety remains the manufacturer’s highest priority, but it’s important that everyone responds to recalls promptly and efficiently. The company greatly appreciates customer patience and understanding during this period.
