The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has called on newly admitted accounting technicians to strengthen their digital skills and keep pace with technologies such as AI, automation and data analytics, Nigerian newspaper Punch reported.
At the 64th Accounting Technicians Scheme West Africa (ATSWA) Induction Ceremony in Lagos, ICAN Council president and chairman Hajia Seghosime stated that the future of accounting belongs to those who can merge strong technical expertise with technological adaptability.
Seghosime was quoted by the publication as saying: “We live in an era in which AI, automation, data analytics, sustainability reporting and other emerging technologies are reshaping the accountancy profession at an unprecedented pace.”
The event formally admitted new members into ICAN’s Accounting Technicians Scheme (ATS), making them members of the Association of Accounting Technicians West Africa, which operates under the Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa.
The ceremony saw the admission of “hundreds of accounting technicians” into the profession.
At the event, Seghosime encouraged the inductees to keep upgrading their competencies, adopt “innovation” and maintain a “forward-looking” mindset as the profession continues to evolve.
According to her, joining the accounting profession entails an obligation to safeguard public trust. She added that while technical ability could open doors, integrity remained the basis for lasting success.
She added: “Today’s admission is a significant milestone, but it is only the beginning of your professional journey.
“Your ATS qualification provides you with a strong foundation and a unique opportunity to proceed directly to the professional level of the institute’s examinations.
“I encourage you to pursue the prestigious Chartered Accountant designation without delay.”
ICAN presents the ATS as a route to developing accounting professionals to deliver finance, bookkeeping and reporting support across the public and private sectors.
“ICAN urges accounting technicians to build digital skills” was originally created and published by The Accountant, a GlobalData owned brand.
