Attraction behaves less like a fixed physical fact than a running judgement: in one study an unpleasant personality made people rate the same face as less attractive, and feeling understood by a partner is what sustains desire: the actions that destroy attraction mostly reveal character

The genre of advice about killing attraction treats it as a fixed asset you can squander: be too keen, too available, too anything, and you drain a fund of desire the other person arrived with. It is a tidy model, and the research on how attraction actually works does not support it. Attraction looks less like a quantity you deplete and more like a running judgement other people keep updating, and the biggest revisions come from what your behaviour reveals about your character.

Two lines of research make the point better than any list of don’ts.

Personality changes how a face looks

In a 2007 study in the journal Personal Relationships, Gary Lewandowski, Arthur Aron, and Jonathan Gee had people rate photographs of strangers for physical attractiveness. After a delay, participants saw the same faces again, this time paired with a short description of the person’s personality, either desirable, undesirable, or neutral, and rated the faces once more.

The ratings moved. When a face came attached to a warm, honest, helpful personality, people judged it as more physically attractive than they had the first time. When the same kind of face came with an unpleasant personality, they judged it as less attractive. The photograph had not changed at all. What changed was what the viewer now knew about the person inside it.

This is one study using rated photographs rather than real relationships, so it should not be stretched too far. But it lands a blow against the whole premise. If character can shift how physically attractive a face appears, then attraction was never the fixed physical thing the advice assumes. The unkind remark does not just cost you points on charm. It can quietly make you look worse.

Desire runs on feeling understood

The second line of work concerns desire in actual relationships, where attraction is supposed to be hardest to keep alive. Here the psychologists Gurit Birnbaum and Harry Reis have studied what they call partner responsiveness: the sense that someone understands you, values you, and is genuinely attentive to what you need.

Across several studies, including experiments where people interacted with a responsive or an unresponsive partner, feeling that a partner was responsive tended to raise sexual desire for them. People who felt understood were more likely to see the other person as a valuable partner, and to feel special themselves, and desire followed. The effect was generally stronger for women, but the direction held broadly.

Run that backwards and you get one of the most reliable ways to erode attraction. Being unresponsive, not listening, talking over someone, treating their inner life as an inconvenience, is not a neutral misstep. It removes the exact ingredient this research links to desire. The person who complains that the spark faded, while spending every evening half-present behind a phone, may be describing a consequence rather than a mystery.

So what actually destroys attraction

Put the two findings together and the useful picture is almost the opposite of the standard advice. The behaviours that reliably damage attraction are not the ones that reveal you like someone too much. They are the ones that reveal something unappealing about you, or that signal you are not really paying attention to them.

Contempt is the clearest example. Sneering, mocking, treating a partner as beneath you, all broadcast exactly the kind of character the first study showed makes a face look worse. Chronic self-absorption is another, because it starves the responsiveness the second line of work ties to desire. So does cruelty dressed up as honesty, and the slow withdrawal of attention that tells someone they no longer merit your curiosity.

Notice what is missing from that list: enthusiasm, availability, texting back promptly, showing that you care. The dating-advice canon treats these as attraction-killers, warning people to seem less interested than they are. The evidence points the other way. Warmth and genuine attention are closer to the engine of attraction than a threat to it. Playing it cool mostly signals low responsiveness, which is the thing that actually dampens desire.

The advice persists because it contains a grain of something real and then misreads it. Being selective, having a life and standards of your own, is genuinely appealing, because it suggests a person worth winning over. But the popular version confuses selectivity with indifference and tells people to perform the indifference directly. Manufacturing unavailability, delaying replies on purpose, feigning disinterest, does not read as high standards. It reads as low responsiveness, and the research keeps pointing to responsiveness, not scarcity, as the thing desire feeds on. The self-respecting version of “don’t chase” is having your own life, not pretending you do not care about theirs.

What the research cannot tell you

Some caution is in order. The attractiveness study used still photographs and brief personality sketches, a long way from meeting someone across a table. The desire research includes lab interactions and self-reports, and the effects, while consistent, are averages with real variation between people and between cultures. None of this is a formula, and attraction obviously involves physical and circumstantial factors that no amount of good character overrides.

There is also a limit to how much any of it should be treated as instruction. The point is not to perform warmth as a new tactic, which curdles quickly into another kind of inauthenticity. Manufactured responsiveness is still a form of not really listening, and people are reasonably good at detecting it.

The more honest takeaway is that attraction is not a resource you guard by managing how keen you appear. It is closer to a byproduct of how you treat the person in front of you. The actions that destroy it are mostly the ones that would make you less appealing to be around in any context, romantic or not, which is a less exciting answer than the listicles offer and a considerably more useful one.
