How Costco Is Quietly Using AI to Lower Your Costs

You probably don’t associate Costco with cutting-edge artificial intelligence. You go there for the bulk toilet paper, the cheap gas, and the legendary $1.50 hot dog combo.

But ahead of the company’s March 5 earnings report, Wall Street is buzzing about something else entirely. Costco is quietly rolling out serious tech upgrades behind the scenes, and it’s doing so to protect the one thing we all care about: keeping prices low.

The silent pharmacy upgrade

According to industry reports, Costco has integrated AI into its pharmacy inventory system. It isn’t just a corporate buzzword. The system autonomously compares prescription drug pricing across vendors and predictively reorders medications.

This automation pushed its pharmacy in-stock rates to over 98%, according to a December 2025 earnings call. When a retailer runs efficiently behind the counter, it protects its margins. And when Costco protects its margins, it doesn’t have to pass extra costs on to you.

Speaking of pharmacy savings, if you’re tired of overpaying for medications, it’s worth checking out its discount programs. (See “New Costco Pharmacy Discount Rivals Insurance Co-pays.”)

Speeding up the checkout line

Costco is also attacking its biggest weakness: the dreaded checkout line. If you’ve shopped there recently, you might have noticed some changes at the front door.

Here is how it’s updating the warehouse experience:

Digital wallets: It’s moving away from forcing you to dig out a physical card.
Door scanners: Scanning at the door verifies active memberships immediately, which cuts down on moochers who slow down the lines and eat into the store’s profitability.
Pre-scan baskets: Employees are now scanning small-to-medium baskets while you wait in line.

Costco’s CEO Ron Vachris recently noted that locations using this pre-scan technology have seen checkout speeds improve by up to 20%, as reported by CFO Dive.

Pumping gas with AI

The tech upgrades don’t stop inside the warehouse. The company is even testing AI to optimize inventory management at its gas stations.

Anyone who has waited in a long line for cheap premium fuel knows that efficiency at the pump is critical. If Costco can predict fuel demand better, it keeps the lines moving and the prices anchored.

Why this matters for your wallet

When a massive retailer invests in technology, it usually means it’s trying to figure out how to squeeze more money out of you. Costco’s approach is different. Its entire business model relies on keeping overhead extremely low so it can cap its markups.

If AI and digital scanners help Costco offset the rising costs of healthcare and wages, it can keep its membership fees reasonable and grocery prices down.

If you want to know if the warehouse club makes financial sense for your family, check out “Can a Costco Membership Save You Money?”

It’s just one more reason why the warehouse club remains a dominant force in retail, and a smart play for anyone trying to stretch a household budget.
