Former presidential candidate and First Lady Hillary Clinton must have felt the time had come to state the obvious. Despite her previous and repeated endorsement of Joe Biden before the 2024 election, Mrs. Clinton now says Biden made a “terrible mistake” in seeking re-election. Her comments were made during an interview with an editor for The New York Times.

“He made a terrible mistake for himself, his legacy, and for the country,” Mrs. Clinton asserted. Citing Mr. Biden’s pledge not to run again, the former secretary of state went on to say: “I believe if he had kept to his plan and said in, say, the late summer of 2023 that he wasn’t going to run, that he was going to pass the torch to the next generation, we would have had a real contest.” She continued to speculate that whoever emerged from the primary process would have beaten Donald Trump.

Hindsight Hillary Has Buyer’s Remorse

The former presidential candidate was solidly behind President Biden in 2024, even posting on social media: “The choice in this election remains very simple. It’s a choice between someone who cares about you – your rights, your prospects, your future – versus someone who’s only in it for himself.”

It’s an often-cited platitude, but it certainly applies here: Hindsight is 20/20. Several posters on X noted that Mrs. Clinton said nothing at the time and encouraged people to vote for Biden again. Even non-hostile Hillary posters seemed surprised by her lecturing tone to her own party. Sbilley wrote: “Well, duh, Hill, it took you this long to figure that out? The D party has no one to blame but themselves.” Someone called KM wrote: “While he shouldn’t have run when he said he wouldn’t, pretending it would have been a forgone conclusion the primary winner on D side would have won is BS.”

Scott Rasmussen at Napolitan News Service posted a poll showing that 54% of all voters “say the Democrats would have done better if Biden had stepped down before the primary. This includes 65% of Democrats.”

That Democratic Party elites are still stewing about their 2024 election disaster is revealing. The in-house autopsy was done, and so it would seem it’s time to move on – especially since the midterms are just around the corner. But with the publishing of Mrs. Biden’s memoirs and Hunter Biden appearing on various media outlets, it seems that the Bidens have not gone quietly into the night. Now that Hillary Clinton is chiming in, it becomes even more challenging to put the last election in the rearview mirror.

However, at some point, the Democratic Party must put an end to sitting in sackcloth and ashes. The time for lamentations has clearly expired. Dredging up 2024 is not going to get them where they want to be: the party in power.

In politics, as in life, the pendulum continues to swing, and while we have no idea where it will land in the next election, we do know that focusing on what went wrong last time rather than looking ahead is not a winning strategy. That Hillary feels the need to impart her words of wisdom to the party faithful is a signal that the Democrats have yet to process just what happened and why.
