Roman Emperor Caracalla was assassinated in 217AD, and Diocletian became emperor in 284 AD. However, from the year of Caracalla’s death (217AD) to Diocletian’s rise (284AD), there were at least 26 emperors who held power. The period between the assassination of Caracalla and the rise of Diocletian who reformed the Empire creating the Tetrarchy of co-emperors to end the revolving door of emperors, is known as the Crisis of the Third Century (235–284AD). This was a time of immense instability for the Roman Empire, marked by numerous civil wars and military usurpers. Did each one think he would make a difference?
