If you’re in the market for a safe, used SUV for your newly licensed teen driver that costs less than $10,000, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Consumer Reports has you covered.
The organizations recently released a list of 45 used cars and SUVs usually available for less than $10,000 that have performed well on crash tests and have highly rated headlights and automatic emergency braking systems that can detect pedestrians.
“We curate this annual list specifically for teens because driving holds extra risk for them,” IIHS Senior Research Scientist Rebecca Weast said in a statement. “That said, the suggestions are suitable for drivers of any age looking to balance affordability with crash protection and crash avoidance.”
“A teen’s first car is a major milestone,” Emily Thomas, associate director of auto safety at Consumer Reports, said in a statement. “Whether you’re buying them a vehicle or deciding which family car they should begin driving, these lists help parents make those choices with confidence, and without compromising on safety.”
The 6 Expert-Recommended Midsize SUVs
1. Volvo XC90Model Years Recommended: 2013–2024Median Used Price: $6,000
Car and Driver said: “Despite entering its ninth model year, the 2024 XC90 remains one of the sharpest-looking mid-size luxury SUVs on the market. The same applies to the XC90’s cabin, which benefits from a simple but modern interior design that’s complemented by rich material choices.”
2. GMC TerrainModel Years Recommended: 2014–2020Median Used Price: $6,400
MotorTrend said: “Today’s small crossover market is packed with options, ranging from entry-level economy options to high-end luxury vehicles. Not as outright cheap as the bottom end and not as opulent as the top, the Terrain intends for a premium ambiance with American brand appeal.”
3. Volvo XC60Model Years Recommended: 2013–2021Median Used Price: $6,400
Kelley Blue Book said: “The reasons that can pull buyers to the Volvo dealership include comprehensive safety features, sophisticated powertrains (including one engine that uses both kinds of forced induction, or there’s a plug-in hybrid for greater fuel efficiency).”
4. Nissan MuranoModel Years Recommended: 2015–2020Median Used Price: $8,100
Edmunds said: “The 2020 Nissan Murano stands out for its striking exterior design and comfortable seats. It also has a powerful engine. But that styling comes at a cost. The sloping roofline cuts into rear visibility, making the Murano feel larger than it is.”
5. Kia SorentoModel Years Recommended: 2016–2018Median Used Price: $8,200
Car and Driver said: “If you’re looking for a capable, flexible, and comfortable two- or three-row-crossover, the Kia Sorento is a solid choice. Seating for either five or seven, three engines, and both front- and all-wheel-drive variants mean there’s a Sorento for every taste.”
6. Audi Q5Model Years Recommended: 2015–2025; built after January 2015Median Used Price: $9,800
MotorTrend said: “Audi’s bestselling model is the Q5. And with good reason — this compact SUV provides a compelling mix of design, luxury, tech, versatility, and performance.”
