FDA Links Recalled Eggs to 98 Salmonella Cases Across 17 States

Check your refrigerator: A salmonella outbreak linked to recalled eggs has sickened at least 98 people and hospitalized 26 across 17 states, according to a July 24 update from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Investigators say evidence points to shell eggs produced by Midwest Poultry Services as a likely source of the outbreak. The findings come days after the company recalled nearly 1.6 million dozen eggs because of potential salmonella contamination.

What the FDA’s Latest Investigation Found

According to the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, illnesses have been reported in 17 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas and West Virginia.

People became sick between Nov. 21, 2025, and June 30, 2026. Of 44 people interviewed, 40, or 91%, reported eating eggs before becoming ill.

The FDA said traceback efforts identified Midwest Poultry Services as a common egg source. In addition, samples collected by the company at its Texas farms tested positive for Salmonella, and whole genome sequencing found some samples matched the outbreak strain. The company shared those results with the FDA on July 21 before voluntarily initiating the recall.

Which Eggs Are Included in the Recall?

The recall covers white shell eggs and brown cage-free shell eggs produced between June 6 and July 3, 2026, with sell-by or best-by dates from July 20 through Aug. 17, 2026.

The eggs were sold under the Country Morning, Cal-Maine Sunups, Brookshire’s, Simple Truth and Kroger brand names in packages ranging from six to 60 eggs.

Consumers should look for identifying code P-1950 or 0840962 and a Julian date between 157 and 184 printed on the side of the carton. The recalled eggs were sold at Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana, Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana, along with other retailers in those states, as well as Mississippi and New Mexico.

What Should Consumers Do?

The FDA urges consumers to check their refrigerators and throw away recalled eggs or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. Anyone who transferred eggs into another container and cannot determine whether they are part of the recall should discard them.

Restaurants and retailers that received the recalled eggs should not serve or sell them and should thoroughly clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that came into contact with the products.

What Are the Symptoms of Salmonella?

Salmonella illness typically develops within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food, according to the FDA. Common symptoms include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, and illness usually lasts four to seven days.

Young children, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness. The FDA advises anyone experiencing symptoms of a Salmonella infection to contact a health care provider.
