5 Low-Effort Side Hustles You Can Actually Do While Watching TV
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

We all value our downtime. After a long day, sinking into the couch and turning on your favorite show is often the only thing on the agenda. But what if you could monetize that exact routine?

Earning extra money does not always require a grueling second job or sacrificing your weekends. In fact, a recent Bankrate survey shows that millions of Americans bring in hundreds of dollars a month through side hustles. You can claim a piece of that extra income without ever leaving your living room.

The secret is finding low-friction tasks that require minimal focus. These are not get-rich-quick schemes, but rather simple digital chores that can easily replace mindless scrolling on your phone. If you have a smartphone or a laptop, you have everything you need to start generating a secondary income stream while the commercials play.

1. Taking online surveys

Sharing your opinion is one of the easiest ways to earn a few extra dollars during a television binge. Market research companies are constantly looking for consumer feedback to shape future products and advertising campaigns.

Platforms like Swagbucks and Survey Junkie connect you with these companies. You simply fill out a demographic profile, and the platform matches you with relevant questionnaires. The topics range from your grocery shopping habits to your thoughts on new digital services.

While the payout per survey is generally small — usually a few dollars — it adds up over time. You can typically cash out your earnings for digital gift cards or direct bank deposits. Because these surveys do not require deep concentration, they are the perfect companion for a casual evening.

To maximize your efficiency, sign up for multiple survey sites at once. This ensures you always have a steady stream of available questionnaires when you sit down for the night. Just be honest with your answers, as these platforms actively screen for inconsistent responses.

2. Scanning your receipts

If you already buy groceries, household essentials, or gas, you can turn your used receipts into digital currency. Cash-back apps have transformed the way consumers earn rewards on their standard weekly errands.

Apps like Fetch and Ibotta operate on a simple premise. You download the app, browse for current offers, and snap a picture of your store receipt. The software automatically identifies eligible products and credits your account with points or cash.

This is an ideal couch activity. Instead of tossing your receipts in the trash, keep them in a pile on your coffee table. When you sit down to watch a movie, take five minutes to scan them into the apps. It is a passive way to earn up to 10% back on items you were going to purchase anyway.

Some platforms even offer bonuses for purchasing specific promotional items or reaching monthly scanning targets. You can also connect your email address to automatically scan for digital receipts, ensuring you capture rewards for your online shopping as well.

3. Listing unwanted items for sale

Your closets and garage are likely hiding hundreds of dollars in unused goods. Turning that clutter into cash is a side hustle that pairs perfectly with evening television.

The heavy lifting — gathering the items and taking well-lit photos — happens during the day. However, the tedious part of creating the actual online listings is best done from the comfort of your couch.

Open up apps like eBay, Poshmark or Facebook Marketplace on your phone. While your show plays in the background, you can write descriptions, research comparable prices, and upload your photos. Writing a compelling description and setting a fair price takes just a few minutes per item.

When listing clothing, take a moment to note the brand, size and any minor flaws in the description. Honest and detailed listings reduce the chances of a return and help you build a positive seller reputation, which leads to faster sales in the future.

4. Playing mobile games for rewards

It sounds surprising, but game developers will actually pay you to test and play their new releases. The mobile gaming industry is highly competitive, and developers need real users to test engagement.

Reward platforms like Mistplay act as the middleman. You download the app, select a game from their library, and start playing. As you reach certain milestones or time thresholds in the game, you earn units that can be redeemed for retail gift cards.

This requires zero mental strain and fits naturally into a relaxing evening. If you already play puzzles or card games on your phone while watching television, you might as well get paid for it. The earnings will not replace a salary, but it is a fun way to fund your daily coffee habit.

Be aware that these platforms track your active playtime, so you cannot simply leave the game running unattended. However, as long as you are actively tapping and progressing through the levels, your points will steadily accumulate in the background.

5. Completing micro-tasks

If you prefer slightly more structured work, the gig economy offers plenty of bite-sized tasks that can be done from a laptop. Micro-tasking involves completing simple, repetitive digital chores that software cannot yet handle perfectly.

Amazon Mechanical Turk is one of the oldest and most reliable platforms for this type of work. Requesters post thousands of brief tasks, known as Human Intelligence Tasks. These might include identifying objects in a photograph, verifying contact information on a website, or categorizing a list of expenses.

Each task typically pays only a few cents to a few dollars, but they usually take less than a minute to finish. You can easily accept and complete a batch of these assignments while half-watching a sports game or a rerun of a favorite sitcom.

The secret to success on these platforms is maintaining a high accuracy rate. Requesters prioritize workers who consistently submit error-free work. Doing so eventually grants you access to higher-paying tasks that can significantly boost your hourly earning rate.

Maximizing your downtime

Building a secondary income stream is ultimately about consistency, not intensity. By layering these simple activities over your existing leisure time, you can steadily build a financial buffer without feeling like you are working a second shift.

The key is to pick one or two methods that feel natural to you and stick with them. Over the course of a year, that translates into genuine financial progress.

Earning money from your couch might not make you wealthy, but it provides a tangible reward for your time. Start tonight by picking just one of these methods and see how easily it fits into your regular routine.
