Adults Over 50: Ask These Vaccine Questions Before Cold and Flu Season

A fall wellness visit is the perfect time for adults over 50 to review recommended vaccines, update immunization records, and prepare for respiratory illness season. New Africa/Shutterstock

Every fall, many adults over 50 schedule annual checkups, refill prescriptions, and prepare for flu season. It’s also one of the best times to review your vaccination history, because recommendations can change as you age, even if you’ve never missed a shot in your life. Many people are surprised to learn they may now qualify for shingles, pneumococcal, RSV, or updated COVID-19 vaccines based on age, health conditions, or changes in CDC guidance. A five-minute conversation during your appointment could help prevent illnesses that become much more serious later in life.

Rather than wondering whether you’re “caught up,” bring a short list of questions that helps your provider tailor recommendations to your health history. Here are a few key questions you should ask.

Which Vaccines Am I Due for Based on My Age?

Many adults are surprised to learn that vaccine recommendations change after age 50, even if they’ve been healthy for years. For example, the CDC recommends shingles vaccination beginning at age 50, annual influenza vaccination, and pneumococcal vaccination for adults age 50 and older who have not previously received a recommended pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. Depending on your age and medical conditions, RSV and updated COVID-19 vaccines may also be recommended.

Do My Health Conditions Change Which Vaccines I Need?

Consider two neighbors who are both 67 years old. One has diabetes and chronic kidney disease, while the other has no major medical conditions. Even though they’re the same age, their vaccine recommendations may not be identical.

Certain chronic conditions increase the risk of severe illness from infections that vaccines help prevent. Diabetes, heart disease, COPD, asthma, chronic lung disease, kidney disease, weakened immune systems, and some cancer treatments may affect vaccine recommendations or timing.

Even medications like steroids or immune-suppressing drugs can influence which vaccines are appropriate. Bringing an updated medication list to your appointment makes this discussion much easier. Your provider can personalize recommendations instead of relying solely on age-based guidelines.

Should I Get More Than One Vaccine at the Same Visit?

Many adults worry that receiving multiple vaccines at one appointment could overwhelm their immune system. In reality, healthcare providers frequently administer recommended vaccines during the same visit when appropriate, helping patients stay protected without making multiple trips. Your provider can explain which vaccines may be safely given together and whether spacing certain vaccines offers any advantage for your individual circumstances. This question is especially helpful during the busy fall season when flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccinations may all be discussed.

Are There Vaccines I Already Received That I Don’t Need Again?

If you’ve changed doctors, moved to another state, or regularly receive vaccines at a pharmacy, your records may be spread across multiple systems. Bringing pharmacy receipts, previous vaccination cards, or logging into your patient portal before your appointment can save time and help prevent unnecessary repeat vaccinations.

Your healthcare provider may be able to access your state immunization registry or review records from previous providers. Avoiding unnecessary repeat vaccinations while identifying missing doses saves both time and money. Bringing any vaccine records you already have can make this process much smoother.

What Side Effects Should I Expect and When Should I Call the Doctor?

Most vaccine side effects are mild and temporary, such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue, or a low-grade fever. Knowing what is considered normal helps prevent unnecessary worry after your appointment. It’s equally important to understand which symptoms are uncommon and should prompt a call to your healthcare provider. Ask how long side effects typically last and whether over-the-counter medications are appropriate if discomfort develops. You can also ask:

when soreness should improve
when fever becomes concerning
when swelling deserves a phone call
whether OTC pain relievers are appropriate afterward
whether strenuous exercise should be avoided that day

Should I Get My Vaccines at the Pharmacy or My Doctor’s Office?

When it comes to where you get your vaccines, there really isn’t much of a difference. Here are several things you should consider before getting your shots at the local CVS or your doctor’s office…

many vaccines available at pharmacies
Medicare Part D vs Part B coverage can differ
pharmacist can review records
doctor’s office may be better if multiple chronic illnesses are involved
ask which location makes the most financial sense

Your Fall Appointment Is About More Than a Flu Shot

A fall checkup isn’t just an opportunity to renew prescriptions or discuss blood pressure readings. It’s one of the easiest chances each year to make sure you’re protected against illnesses that become increasingly dangerous with age. Vaccine recommendations evolve as new research becomes available and as your own health changes, so even adults who have always stayed current should ask for a fresh review. Bringing a written list of questions (and an updated medication and vaccination record) can help you leave your appointment with confidence instead of uncertainty.
