Summer road trip? Exotic global adventures? With more than 9,000 hotels around the world, you can find a Hilton just about anywhere you’re traveling to.

The massive Hilton umbrella includes a wide array of 27 different brands that offer everything from economy to boutique to extended stay to luxury. (After a recent trip, one of my favorite Hilton brands is the luxurious and unique LXR brand – more on that below.)

I’m a big fan of Hilton hotels and often use my Hilton Honors Bonus Points – earned largely from Hilton credit cards – to make my dream trips possible.

But here’s what many people miss: Even if you only have a couple hotel stays per year, the right hotel card can help you save money, get extra perks, and make your stay much more rewarding.

Here’s why American Express Hilton Honors Credit Cards can help add significant value to your wallet, and why right now is an especially rewarding time to get started.

1. Get a windfall of Hilton Honors Points when you open a new card

Fitting for a brand that knows that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to travel, Hilton offers three consumer credit card options. Issued by American Express, these cards cater to a range of travel priorities, offering perks that vary depending on the card. From the $0-annual-fee entry-level card to premium options that pack in luxury benefits, there’s a Hilton card option for a variety of travel budgets and styles (see rates and fees).

And for a limited time, all three cards are extra rewarding for new cardholders. (Offers end 7/29/26.)

NerdWallet rating

NerdWallet’s ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account the type of card being reviewed (such as cash back, travel or balance transfer) and the card’s rates, fees, rewards and other features.

🧳 Best for casual travelers:

Hilton Honors American Express Card: Earn 100,000 Hilton Honors Bonus Points and a $100 Statement Credit after you spend $2,000 on eligible purchases on the Hilton Honors American Express Card within your first 6 months of Card Membership. Offer ends 7/29/26. Terms Apply.

🤩 Best for frequent or luxury travelers:

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card
NerdWallet rating

NerdWallet’s ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account the type of card being reviewed (such as cash back, travel or balance transfer) and the card’s rates, fees, rewards and other features.

🏨 Best for semi-regular travelers (Popular choice):

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card: Enjoy a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $150 and earn 130,000 Bonus Points after you spend $3,000 in purchases on the Card within your first 6 months of Card Membership. Offer ends 7/29/26. Terms Apply.

2. Automatic elite status

Who doesn’t like feeling special and enjoying extra benefits? Many people think that enjoying elite status at a hotel is reserved for very frequent travelers. And they’re usually right. With the Hilton Honors loyalty program, you’ll need to stay at least 10 nights to earn Silver status, all the way up to 50 nights required to earn upper-tier Diamond status.

But here’s something else that flies under-the-radar for many travelers: The right credit card can give you a status shortcut. That means you can automatically enjoy benefits previously reserved for frequent travelers just by holding a credit card.

And unlike other hotel cards, every consumer American Express Hilton Honors Credit Card offers some level of complimentary elite status – even the $0-annual-fee version.

Hilton Honors American Express Card

Complimentary Hilton Honors Silver status: 20% bonus points on the base points earned on stays, free bottled water, fifth night free when booking a standard room for  five or more consecutive nights on points, and elite rollover nights. Terms apply.

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

Complimentary Hilton Honors Gold status: 80% bonus points on the base points earned on stays, upgrades at select properties when available, milestone bonuses, and daily food and beverage credit at select brands  in the U.S. and complimentary continental breakfast at select brands abroad. Terms apply.

I personally love the daily food and beverage credit I get with my Hilton Honors Gold status. Depending on the brand and location, you’ll get between $10-$25 per person per day (up to 2 people) to use toward a variety of food and beverage options at the hotel. If you’re not a breakfast person, you could use it towards lunch at the pool or an evening cocktail.

My husband and I recently enjoyed a quick getaway to the Waldorf Astoria Washington, D.C., and we splurged on a fancy brunch in the gorgeous atrium restaurant, Peacock Alley. Our $50 in food and beverage credit ($25 per person) went a long way towards covering a delicious a la carte meal.

Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

Complimentary Hilton Honors Diamond status: 100% bonus points on base points earned on stays, executive lounge access (among hotels that offer them), status extension, premium Wi-Fi, 48-hour room guarantee and elite status gifting. Terms apply.

With Hilton Honors Diamond status, you could score a free upgrade to a suite as availability permits, and also access Hilton’s executive lounges, which offer perks like free food and drinks during the afternoon. Not all hotels have executive lounges, though, especially in the U.S.

3. Earn boatloads of points you can redeem for free hotel stays

Even after earning a big pile of points from the new cardholder welcome bonus, the American Express Hilton Honors Credit Cards can help you rack up an impressive stash of Hilton Honors Points in short order.

Every one of these three cards earns at least 3 points per $1 spent on every single eligible purchase made on the Card. Depending on your spending habits, it doesn’t take long before your card can help you earn an eye-popping number of Hilton Honors Points. Here’s what I mean. I currently hold the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card, which earns 6 points per $1 spent at U.S. supermarkets, restaurants and gas stations. Since those are the categories I spend a large amount of my monthly household budget on, I earn a bunch of Hilton Honors Points each month.

Every $200 supermarket run earns me 1,200 Hilton Honors Points. A $50 gas fill-up scores me 300 Hilton Honors Points. An $85 restaurant bill scores 510 Hilton Honors Points. And they add up quickly.

Here’s a glance at how many Hilton Honors Points you’ll earn in various categories with each card. The x multipliers represent how many points per $1 spent you’ll earn. Terms apply.

One unique feature I love about Hilton Honors Points is that you can choose to cover your stay partially with points and pay cash for the rest. Their Points & Money Rewards tool lets you customize with any combination of points and money, starting at just 5,000 Hilton points.

With most other hotel programs, if you don’t have enough points to book the stay you want, you’re out of luck. But thanks to this Hilton feature, you can use points to pare down the out-of-pocket cost on any trip.

4. Unlock a valuable little-known benefit that can save 20%

There’s an incredible benefit relatively hidden within the Hilton Honors program that can save you a bundle on longer stays. If you’re not deep in the world of travel rewards on a daily basis like I am, it’s easy to miss.

But holding any one of the Hilton Honors American Express Credit Cards can unlock it.

It’s called Fifth Night Free, and it offers exactly what it sounds like: when you stay for five or more consecutive nights, your fifth night is free! (Subject to availability and Hilton Honors terms.)

There are two conditions: You must have Silver elite status or higher, and you must pay for your stay with points.

As I mentioned earlier, you’ll automatically have Hilton elite status holding any of the Hilton Honors American Express Credit Cards. And, as I showed you, by using your Hilton card on everyday purchases, you can rack up a sizable pile of points to book your stay in no time.

Better yet, it’s not just your first fifth night that is free. It’s EVERY fifth night free.

You can take advantage of this benefit multiple times in the year on stays of at least 5 nights booked with points. You can get both the 5th night and the 10th night free if you’re enjoying an extended trip at the same property. That’s a solid 20% savings when you book an eligible award stay entirely with points. Terms apply

5. Access the most valuable Free Night Rewards in the industry

In many cases, when a credit card offers a free night certificate to cardholders, it comes with many asterisks. It may only be good for certain properties or categories of hotel. It may have a capped value. There may be a laundry list of blackout dates or other restrictions.

NerdWallet’s ratings are determined by our editorial team. The scoring formula takes into account the type of card being reviewed (such as cash back, travel or balance transfer) and the card’s rates, fees, rewards and other features.

Hilton’s Free Night Rewards are arguably the most valuable because they are good for any available standard room at eligible properties with no cap. (Subject to availability, program exclusions may apply.) And the only way you can earn these Free Night Rewards is by holding the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card or the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card.

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card: Free Night Reward can be earned after spending $15,000 in purchases in a calendar year. Terms apply.

Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: Automatically earn a Free Night Reward in your first year of Card Membership and every year following your card renewal. Earn a second night after you spend $30,000, and a third night after you spend an additional $30,000 (for a total of $60,000) in purchases on the card in the same calendar year. Terms apply.

I recently used my Hilton Free Night Reward to help cover a luxurious stay at the LXR Zemi Beach House in Anguilla. This boutique oceanfront resort cost $678 or 130,000 Hilton Honors Points per night.

I enjoyed a 3-night stay and was easily able to cover one night with my Free Night Reward and the other two nights using my Hilton Honors Points by calling to book.

Bottom line: Is a Hilton Honors American Express credit card worth it?

For any traveler looking to earn valuable points and perks to help cover the cost of travel, the answer is a resounding yes.

With three options to choose from, there’s a great choice for every traveler. The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card is the one I currently hold and tend to recommend most.

But the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card comes with a slew of valuable credits that may help offset the annual fee, and the Hilton Honors American Express Card is a great fit for casual travelers just getting started.

The valuable, limited-time offers available on all three cards end July 29, 2026.
