Chubb Travel Insurance Review – NerdWallet
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

Chubb travel insurance offers several different plans that vary by the amount of coverage they provide. If you’re taking a lot of expensive vacations or work trips, then the top Chubb plan may be for you. Shorter or cheaper journeys could be covered by a lower-tier plan. This is what you need to know about each of Chubb’s three individual trip travel plans.

Chubb travel insurance offerings

Chubb’s travel protection plans are underwritten by ACE Property & Casualty Insurance Company. There are three primary travel insurance plans in its single-trip portfolio with the rates and options varying based on your home state and travel destination. All three of these plans have a waiver for preexisting medical conditions.

Travel Basics Plus: Covers essential protection, like trip cancellation or interruption, plus baggage and emergency medical coverage.

Travel Essentials Plus: This is a more comprehensive plan that offers a full range of standard coverage, including greater trip interruption, medical and emergency evacuation protections.

Travel Choice Plus: Best for travelers who want the highest trip delay or interruption and medical coverage.

What Chubb travel insurance covers

Chubb’s single-trip travel insurance plans include a wide range of coverage benefits with varying degrees of protection depending on which one you purchase. More expensive trips will certainly be better candidates for higher plans than a simple, inexpensive vacation.

Trip cancellation, trip delay or trip interruption: If your trip has disruptions or you need to cancel, qualifying, prepaid or nonrefundable expenses (like a hotel night you miss due to a delayed or canceled flight) would be covered. Other expenses like hotels, food or transportation are also covered if the result of a covered delay.

Emergency medical and evacuation services: During your trip, if you experience injury or illness needing emergency medical and dental coverage, travel insurance helps to cover the cost although the amount of protection depends on your specific plan.

Lost bags and luggage delays: Chubb’s travel insurance plans all include protection for your baggage if it is lost, damaged or stolen, but the amount varies by plan.
Rental car insurance: This protection is an optional addition to plans all reaching $35,000 in collision coverage although there are exceptions.

Lost document or cash protection: If you lose important documents (like a passport due to misplacement or theft) or have your money stolen, trip delay benefits may apply.

Chubb Travel Protection detailed policy overview

When searching the cost of a Chubb Travel Protection plan, you will need to provide your state of residence and trip destination to determine the price.

NerdWallet reviewed available Chubb travel insurance options by planning a trip for a 45-year-old traveler living in Illinois and bound for Mexico on a one-week trip to Mexico, valued at $1,500, on March 1-7, 2027.

Based on these details, the lowest Travel Basics Plus plan costs $103 for the trip, and it covers up to 100% of the prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs for eligible reasons. Also included: baggage, sickness and emergency evacuation protections.

Travel Essentials Plus costs $130 and adds greater coverage for the above categories, but also adds missed flight connection and accidental death or dismemberment protections. Travel Choice Plus costs $190 and comes with even higher limits on all of the above.

For example, the Essentials and Choice Plans cover 150% of the cost of an interrupted trip (up to $150,000) compared to just 100% for the Basics plan (up to $100,000). The Basics plan only covers up to $15,000 in accident and medical expenses versus $50,000 for the Essentials plan and $100,000 for the Choice plan.

Add-on options include coverage for flight accidents, rental car damage protection and emergency evacuation.

What Chubb plans do not cover

Chubb Travel Protection plans are very specific on their coverage and exclusions. These are some of the other examples where Chubb’s travel insurance won’t protect you if plans change:

Normal pregnancy or childbirth.

Preexisting conditions that do not fall under the medical exclusion waiver.

Intentional self-inflicted injury or actions meant to result in loss.

Participation in extreme sports or high-risk activities.

Criminal acts.

Natural disasters that are otherwise not covered in the policy.

Acts of war.

Mental, nervous or psychological disorder.

Open-ended tickets without specific dates of travel.

Be sure to consult your plan’s policy details to see all of the exclusions.

How much is Chubb travel insurance?

Prices will vary based on your state of residence, age, destination and trip value. In the Mexico example above, the difference between the lowest plan (Travel Basics Plus, $103) and the highest option (Travel Choice Plus, $190) was $87.

Without the additional options like car rental policy, flight accident coverage or emergency evacuation, the highest plan is 13% of the trip’s overall cost. The least expensive plan is 6.9% of the trip cost.

Which Chubb plan is best for me?

Your risk tolerance will determine the best policy for you. The more expensive, lengthy and distant your trip, the more likely it is that your travel insurance can save big money in the event your travel plans go awry.

Does Chubb offer 24/7 travel assistance?

Yes, all Chubb travel insurance plans come with 24-hour assistance services, which can provide substantial relief if you’re traveling in another time zone or country.

Within the U.S., call 855-327-1414 (toll-free). Travelers in other areas of the world can call 630-694-9764 or email [email protected].

How to file a claim with Chubb travel insurance

There are several ways to file a claim with Chubb travel insurance through its online claims website. There is contact information if you have questions, via phone or email, and the website explains what documents are needed depending upon your particular claim.

Is Chubb travel insurance worth it?

It most certainly can be if you have concerns about an upcoming trip. Adding travel insurance, based on your risk tolerance, can take some of the worry away from any type of travel disruption or unforeseen health issue. And if your bags go missing or you need emergency help at your destination, Chubb travel insurance can come to the rescue.

If you have no other coverage or it is not sufficient for the value of your trip, a comprehensive travel plan can be a smart move.
