Save Money Eating Out: 10 Family Meal Hacks at Popular Restaurants
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LInkedIn

If you’ve tried to feed a family at a restaurant lately, you know how quickly the total can add up.

But one thing I’ve learned over the years is that many restaurants actually have surprisingly affordable menu options, weekly specials, family meals, rewards programs, and portion sizes that can stretch much further than you’d expect.

Sometimes it’s as simple as ordering one larger meal to share, choosing an appetizer instead of two full entrées, or taking advantage of certain days of the week when restaurants offer discounted specials. And with food prices still feeling high, those little strategies can really add up for families trying to stick to a budget.

Recently, on the MoneySavingMom.com Facebook page, I asked readers to share their favorite budget-friendly restaurant hacks and meal ideas. And the comments were full of practical suggestions from real families.

I rounded up some of the best restaurants on a budget. These ideas work well for families and are available in many locations across the U.S. Hopefully these ideas give you a few new ways to enjoy eating out without blowing your budget!

10 Ways to Save Money Dining Out at Popular Restaurants:

1. IHOP: Share Omelets and Pancakes

IHOP has historically had some of the best prices on breakfast food as well as some great lunch and dinner options. You can usually get a basic breakfast (two eggs, your choice of protein, hash browns, and toast) for just $11.99. Ordering a few omelet meals can also go a long way. Each omelet typically comes with a stack of pancakes, which makes it easy to split between multiple people.

Instead of ordering separate meals for everyone, you can:

Order a few omelets

Divide them up

Share the pancakes across the table

This works especially well for families with younger kids who don’t need full portions.

2. Cracker Barrel: Order from the Adult Menu (Even for Kids)

Cracker Barrel is a great example of how the adult menu can sometimes be a better deal than the kids’ menu. One Facebook commenter mentioned that they like ordering the 6-piece grilled chicken tenders meal with sides. Here’s why it works:

You can choose pancakes as a side (instant kid meal!)

You still get two additional sides

It often costs less per serving than ordering multiple kids’ meals

More food, better value.

3. Costco: Cheap and Filling Food Court Meals

If you have a membership, Costco is hard to beat for budget-friendly meals. Their food court options are famous for a reason:

Hot dogs (with a drink!) are incredibly cheap

Pizza slices are large and shareable

This can easily feed a family for a fraction of what you’d spend elsewhere.

4. Panera Bread: Look for “2 For” Breakfast Deals

At Panera Bread, breakfast can be a surprisingly budget-friendly option if you’re paying attention to deals and ordering strategically. They often run “2 for” breakfast sandwich promotions, which can make a big difference if you’re feeding more than one person.

Instead of ordering separate meals, you can:

Split the sandwiches between adults or older kids

Pair one sandwich with a bagel or pastry to stretch the meal further

Share sides like fruit cups or yogurt

Another tip: Panera’s portions are usually generous enough that you can mix and match items instead of ordering full meals for everyone. If you have younger kids, one sandwich plus a side can easily cover two appetites.

And, if you’re a regular, their rewards program and occasional free item offers can make breakfast there even more affordable over time.

5. Culver’s: Higher Quality Fast Food That’s Worth Sharing

Culver’s is one of those places where you can still find a more “old-school” approach to savings, including coupons and simple value deals that actually make a difference. If you’re on their mailing list (or even just keeping an eye on local ads), you may still receive paper coupons in the mail, local promotions, or limited-time discounts, as well as app-based or in-store specials depending on your location.

They’re also known for their value baskets, which bundle a main item, side, and drink at a better price than ordering everything separately. It’s a straightforward way to get a full, filling meal without overthinking your order.

Another fun bonus is their Flavor of the Day, which gives you a rotating dessert option that lets you get a treat without splurging on multiple extras.

I also love how Culver’s makes your food fresh to order. So, while it’s technically fast food, it often feels a bit more like a casual dine-in experience, which can make it feel more worthwhile when you do decide to eat out.

6. Chipotle: Stretch Burrito Bowls Into Multiple Meals

Chipotle is one of the best places to stretch your dollar if you’re feeding multiple people.

Here’s a simple strategy many families use:

Order 2 burrito bowls

Ask for tortillas on the side

Add an order of chips (or bring your own snacks from home)

From there, you can turn those bowls into burritos, tacos, or smaller portions for kids.

Because the bowls are so packed with rice, beans, protein, and toppings, they can easily stretch into multiple servings. You can even save part of it for leftovers later, which makes it feel like you’re getting two meals for the price of one.

7. KFC: Take Advantage of Weekly Specials

KFC still offers some solid budget-friendly deals, especially if you plan your visit around specific days of the week.

Readers have mentioned that some locations offer deals like Monday chicken pot pie specials, Wednesday chicken fried steak meals, or other rotating value deals depending on your area.

These meals are often priced significantly lower than regular menu items, sometimes under $5, which is hard to beat for a hot, filling meal.

To make the most of it:

Check your local KFC’s weekly deals online or in the app

Pair discounted entrées with simple sides at home

Consider ordering a few discounted items and splitting them across the family

This is one of those cases where timing your visit can make a big difference in how much you spend.

8. Chick-fil-A: Go for Grilled Nuggets

Chick-fil-A can definitely add up, but there are a few ways to keep it more budget-friendly.

Grilled nuggets are a great option because they’re easy to share between kids, filling without being too heavy, and a good protein option if you’re trying to avoid fried foods.

To stretch your order:

Share one larger nugget tray between multiple kids

Split fries instead of ordering one per person

Skip drinks and bring water, or drink at home if you’re getting takeout

You can also take advantage of the Chick-fil-A app for rewards and occasional free items, which can help offset the cost if your family eats there regularly.

9. Panda Express: Family Meals Are a Hidden Gem

If you’re feeding a group, the family meal at Panda Express is one of the best values out there. These meals typically include multiple large entrées and large sides (like fried rice or chow mein).

Instead of ordering individual plates, you can:

Divide everything up family-style

Let everyone pick a little of what they want

Stretch the meal across several people

This family meal can easily feed 4–5 people, sometimes even with leftovers.

It’s a great option when you want variety without paying for separate meals for everyone.

10. Texas Roadhouse: Mix an Entrée and Appetizer

At Texas Roadhouse, portions are generous, which makes it a perfect place to share.

Instead of ordering two full entrées, one person can order an entrée with sides and the other can order an appetizer. This simple switch can save quite a bit while still leaving everyone full.

And, of course, the rolls (with that cinnamon butter!) are a big bonus:

They’re free

They’re filling

They help stretch your meal so you don’t need as much food

You can even take leftovers home if you still have food left, which adds even more value to the meal.

Simple Ways to Eat Out Without Overspending

Eating out doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing decision when you’re trying to stick to a budget. The truth is, many restaurants still offer affordable options. You just have to know where to look and how to order. From weekly specials and value meals to smarter menu choices, a little intention can go a long way in helping your money stretch further.

If you’re trying to be more mindful with your spending, consider choosing one of these popular restaurants and following our advice the next time you eat out. You might be surprised at how much you can save while still enjoying a meal out.
