On 30 June 2025 the WHO Commission on Social Connection reported that about one in six people worldwide are affected by loneliness, and that it is linked to more than 871,000 deaths every year. That works out to roughly 100 an hour.
A quick note before going further: we are not clinicians or psychologists, and this is reading and reflection on a research report, not advice. The death figure in particular is an estimate of a pattern across large populations, not a precise body count, and a population-level pattern tells you nothing certain about any one person’s life.
Vivek Murthy, the former US Surgeon General who co-chaired the commission, called loneliness “a defining challenge of our time.”
He made a narrower point elsewhere that is harder to wave away. “I think many people think of loneliness as just a bad feeling,” Murthy said. “But when you see numbers like that, it makes clear that it is massively consequential for our health and well-being.”
The obvious question is how a mood could relate to mortality. The short answer is that researchers have a suspected explanation, not a proven one. The idea most often floated runs through the body’s stress response: constant loneliness seems to register as a kind of threat, keeping stress switched on in ways that wear the body down over time. That’s a proposed mechanism, not a clean chain running from isolation to death.
What’s on firmer ground is the statistical link. Julianne Holt-Lunstad’s 2015 review of many studies found social isolation tied to 29% higher odds of dying. The WHO adds that loneliness and isolation come with higher rates of stroke, heart disease and dementia, and that lonely people are twice as likely to become depressed. The feeling and the physical outcomes show up together often enough that treating them as unrelated looks like the mistake.
It’s tempting to file loneliness as a problem of comfortable, over-connected societies, the kind of thing that surfaces once survival is handled. The WHO data points the other way. The commission found the highest rates in low-income countries, around 24%, against roughly 11% in high-income ones. Loneliness tracks with hardship it seems, not wealth.
Independent data lands in the same place. An analysis of 2023-24 Gallup World Poll responses across 148 countries found loneliness highest in low-income countries and Sub-Saharan Africa, not in the wealthy nations you might guess.
The young are hit hard too: the WHO reports that between 17% and 21% of people aged 13 to 29 report loneliness, with the highest share among teenagers. Chido Mpemba, the commission’s other co-chair, put the paradox plainly: “Even in a digitally connected world, many young people feel alone.”
The report is not just a diagnosis. It treats social connection as a neglected third strand of health, sitting alongside the physical and the mental, and lays out a five-area plan covering policy, research, interventions, measurement and public engagement.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus framed the trend as getting worse. “In this age when the possibilities to connect are endless, more and more people are finding themselves isolated and lonely,” he said. We’d treat the “more and more” carefully, since the data is mostly a snapshot rather than a proven upward trend, but that worry is the whole reason the commission exists.
The causes the commission names are things like poor health, low income, living alone, and weak community life, and those are stubbornly local. A global body can pass a resolution and publish a plan. It cannot introduce your neighbor to the person three doors down. At the time of the report only eight member states had adopted policies on social connection, which tells you how early this all is.
So the WHO has done the useful thing: it put a number on a feeling and forced it onto the health agenda. What the number can’t do is close the gap between a strategy written and the small, specific act that actually ends someone’s isolation, a phone call, a shared meal, a standing invitation. The statistic is global, but the fix, as far as we can tell, stays local.
