The company behind Singha beer removed one of its heirs from every executive role days after an abuse allegation went public — a reckoning Asian family dynasties usually avoid

On May 19, Boonrawd Brewery — the family-owned company behind Singha, the beer brand nearly synonymous with Thailand — announced that it had removed Sunit Scott from all his positions in the company and its affiliated businesses. The statement was short, signed by the chief executive, and unambiguous. What made it notable was not that a company had parted ways with an executive, but who signed it, who it was about, and how little the family tried to keep it quiet.

Sunit is a member of the Bhirombhakdi family, the dynasty that has controlled Boonrawd for four generations. The statement was signed by the company’s CEO, Bhurit Bhirombhakdi, the two men’s cousin. And it followed, by a matter of days, a public accusation of sexual abuse made by Sunit’s own younger brother.

What happened

Earlier in May, Siranudh Scott, 29, posted an emotional video to Facebook accusing his elder brother of sexually abusing him repeatedly when he was a teenager. “Everyone in my family knows it because they listened to the tape I recorded of his confession,” he said, adding that no one had acted on it. He said he no longer wished to be called a “Singha heir”: “I don’t want to stay in a family that doesn’t value me or have empathy for me. I can’t live with this kind of people.” A marine conservationist who founded the conservation group Sea You Strong in the seas off southern Thailand, Siranudh is a public figure in his own right, and his account moved quickly from a family matter to a national one.

Boonrawd’s response, when it came, was direct. The company said Sunit had been dismissed from all his positions and that it would cooperate with authorities’ investigations. It expressed “its deepest regret to Siranudh Scott for what happened.” Sunit has denied the sexual-abuse allegation, acknowledging what he described as roughhouse play between boys; in a letter the company posted on his behalf, he wrote that he would step back from his roles “until the matter is clarified and conclusively proved.”

Why the corporate response is the story

Across much of Asia, a family conglomerate facing an accusation against one of its own tends to close ranks. Disputes are settled by patriarchs, elders, or informal family councils rather than announced by the corporate parent; the instinct is to protect the name and handle the matter privately. That is what makes Boonrawd’s move unusual. The company did not issue a no-comment or a holding line. It named the outcome, apologized to the accuser by name, and did so under the signature of the accused man’s own cousin, who runs the company.

That is a governance choice as much as a personal one. When a company is effectively indistinguishable from a family, separating the two is not routine. Boonrawd has been run by descendants of its founder since 1933, when it became Thailand’s first and oldest brewery; the family name and the corporate name are the same name. Removing Sunit meant the family, acting through the company, publicly took a side in a dispute between two of its own.

The business behind the name

The stakes are not only reputational within Thailand. The Bhirombhakdi holdings extend well beyond beer into food manufacturing, hotels, power and property, and Forbes has estimated the family’s fortune at around $1.75 billion at the time, placing it among the country’s wealthiest. Singha is one of Thailand’s most recognizable exports. In the days after the accusation, some consumers online called for a boycott and speculated about damage to the brand in regional markets. For a company whose value is bound up so tightly with a trusted family name, a scandal inside the family is a business risk, and a fast, visible response is one way to try to contain it.

That reading cuts against the more generous one. It is possible to see Boonrawd’s speed as principle — a family unwilling to shield a member from a serious accusation — and equally possible to see it as reputation management, a calculation that visible action would cost less than the appearance of a cover-up. Both can be true at once, and the statement itself does not settle which weighed more.

What the dismissal does not settle

Almost everything of legal consequence is still open. The allegations have not been tested in court, and Boonrawd’s statement announced no criminal finding — only that the company would cooperate with any investigation. Sunit denies the abuse. Siranudh has said other relatives knew of the recording he describes as a confession and chose not to act, a claim the family has not addressed point by point in public. A dismissal is an employment decision, not a verdict, and it should not be read as one.

What can be said is narrower, and still meaningful: presented with a public accusation against one of its own, one of Thailand’s oldest business dynasties chose to act openly and quickly, in a way its peers usually avoid. Whether that becomes a template for how family conglomerates in the region handle their own crises, or stays a one-off shaped by an unusually public accuser and a brand with a great deal to lose, is the part worth watching.

For now, the most unusual thing about the Singha story is not the accusation, difficult as it is, but the decision to answer it in daylight.
