We picture loneliness as an old person’s burden, yet a global 2023 survey found this may not be the case: across 142 countries, adults aged 19 to 29 reported the most loneliness of any age group, more than a quarter of them

There is a mental image most of us reach for without thinking. Loneliness looks like an elderly person in a quiet house, the phone that rarely rings, the empty chair across the table. It is the picture behind a lot of well-meaning charity campaigns and a lot of family worry.

And research suggests, it’s not the full picture at all.

A quick note before going further: we are not clinicians or psychologists, and nothing here is advice about your own situation. This is one attempt to think through what a large survey and a couple of studies actually found. The research is observational, and a pattern across millions of people is not a diagnosis of any single life, including yours.

What the 2023 survey found

In 2023, Meta and Gallup published a global look at loneliness. It surveyed adults aged 15 and older across 142 countries and areas. Worldwide, 24% of adults said they felt very or fairly lonely.

The loneliest group wasn’t the oldest — it was the youngest adults surveyed. People aged 19 to 29 reported loneliness at 27%, the highest of any age group. Adults 65 and older came in at 17%, the lowest.

The group we tend to worry about most was among the least likely to say they felt lonely at all.

Plenty of people reported the opposite too. Nearly half, 49%, said they did not feel lonely at all. Loneliness is common, not universal. But the age pattern is what unsettles the old assumption. As Gallup’s Ellyn Maese put it, “loneliness is not just a problem of aging.”

Why young adults, when they seem so connected

The obvious guess is that young adults are short of friends. Newer research suggests almost the reverse. A 2025 study in PLOS One by Jeffrey Hall and colleagues surveyed 4,812 Americans aged 18 to 95. It found that young adults score high on loneliness while also scoring high on social well-being — lonely and connected at once. They noted that “Young adults experience an intense ambivalence about their social health – the structure and quality of their relationships is high, but they feel more disconnected and lonelier than other age groups.”

This is a single snapshot in time, so it can show links but not prove cause. The authors are careful about that. What they suggest is that the loneliness of early adulthood “is not bereft of connection, companionship, and friendship, but instead is characteristic of rapid life changes and a lack of relational permanence and routine.” It may be less about how many people you know and more about how much of your life keeps shifting.

Hall was struck by which factor mattered most. He said, “We were surprised to find that having instability – defined as experiencing many recent life changes – was such a good predictor of having ambivalent social health.” That fits the shape of a typical twentysomething’s life: new cities, new jobs, ended relationships, friend groups that scatter after graduation. The connections exist; the stability underneath them doesn’t.

A different eight-country analysis from Washington University researchers found that among adults aged 18 to 24, close to one in two reported loneliness, against about 30% of those 55 and older.

We don’t want to lean too hard on any single study, but when independent efforts keep landing in the same place, the direction starts to look real.

The problem with an outdated picture

Why does the mental image matter? Because we tend to put resources where we expect the problem to be.

If loneliness reads as an old-age condition, the outreach programs, the check-in calls, the policy attention all point that way. A 24-year-old in a new city who feels adrift doesn’t recognize himself in any of it. He has friends. He posts. On paper he looks fine. The word “lonely” doesn’t seem to belong to him, so he keeps it to himself.

The wider world has started catching up. The same Gallup data showed most people aged 45 and older reporting no loneliness at all, while younger adults carried more of it. That is close to the opposite of the story we usually tell. The instability explanation also hints that the fix isn’t only “make more friends,” which young adults often already have. It is something harder to manufacture: routine, permanence, a sense that the ground will still be there next year.

If any of this feels close to home, talking it through with a qualified counsellor or therapist is worth doing, whatever your age.

We keep coming back to how much work a single image does. The lonely old person isn’t wrong, exactly, older people do feel this too, but the picture is narrow enough to hide the group that might well be feeling it most. Loneliness may have been quietly attached to the wrong face, and updating that picture won’t solve anything on its own. It just lets us see who we’ve been overlooking.
